Essentialism is not about how to get more things done; it’s about how to get the right things done. It doesn’t mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy in order to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential.
– Greg McKeown
I am a med student and my course got shortened by 50%. Oh wait, 50% by time but not by course, of course not by course since it is medicine. I want to study the way I want, I want to know it all, I want to do it ‘properly’ but since the time has reduced 50% and even if it would not have reduced that much, it is tough to do it all, this perfectionist mentality of mine is very harmful.
Perfectionism is self-abuse of the highest order.

hence, I have decided to do what is needed, I do not need to know everything. only what is asked in exams is enough. I want time to do other things outside of study, I want to be creative and write poems and stories and tell stories. I want to read books and watch movies and talk about them. There is more to life than this, a lot more. Being caged up in such a curriculum is worse thing that me and everyone in my admission year are going to face. all I am gonna try is just to pass the exams and go on with my life.
There is a societal pressure that a doctor should know everything, well they are worried that doctors might mess up but it’s just not possible to know everything, knowing what is needed the most is good enough I think. yes maybe it is a little controversial but I don’t care.
I am currently reading the book ‘Essentialism’ by Greg McKeown. and will be following the things it has for the next month. Because I need to try it out for myself to know if following essentialism works or not. And look I do not know everything, I myself am working on this, maybe I get proven wrong, maybe I might be onto something and I might be right. I will write about this again after a month and see if it works or it doesn’t work.
if it works I’ll have plenty of spare time to do other things I love and those things are equally important to me as studies are. Life is mysterious so try different things, go in without expectations and you will be positively surprised by what you find.
Thank you for reading this blog, if you guys have any ideas about essentialism or Maybe something I said in the blog is wrong then do comment here.
